How to remove silence from video, not the pauses
To remove silence from video without rushing the speaker, cut only pauses longer than about half a second and leave a little padding on both sides of every cut. ClipsPal does this in one click on a Mac, and its free silence remover does it in a browser with the pause length under your control.
Which pauses to cut and which to keep
Dead air is silence that carries nothing. A pause is silence that carries meaning, and it is the part that makes a speaker sound calm instead of breathless.
| Silence in the recording | Cut or keep | How the settings handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Dead air before the first word and after the last | Cut | Removed in full |
| Gap while you check notes or restart a sentence | Cut | Longer than the minimum pause, so it becomes a cut |
| Breath between sentences, under half a second | Keep | Shorter than the minimum pause, so it stays |
| Beat after a question or before a key point | Keep, shortened | Padding leaves part of it on each side of the cut |
Remove silence from video in your browser
The free silence remover works on video and audio files without an account.
- Drop a video or audio file into the tool. It runs in the browser and the file is not uploaded.
- It reads the noise floor of the file and sets the Volume threshold. Anything quieter counts as silence.
- Leave Minimum pause at 0.5 s. Shorter pauses stay.
- Leave Padding at 150 ms. That much is kept on both sides of every cut.
- Play the preview with "Skip cuts in preview" ticked. The hatched areas on the waveform are the cuts, and Original, After, Removed and Cuts show what changes.
- Press Remove silence and download. Video exports as MP4, audio as MP3.
Files can be up to 4 GB, video up to 30 minutes and audio up to 3 hours.
How to keep natural pauses when editing
Every cut starts one padding after the speech stops and ends one padding before it resumes. So each pause that gets cut still ends up about twice the padding long: 150 ms leaves about 0.3 s, and 250 ms leaves about 0.5 s.
Padding sets how long the remaining pauses are. Minimum pause sets which silences get touched at all.
- Default pace: Minimum pause 0.5 s, Padding 150 ms.
- Faster pace for shorts: Minimum pause 0.3 s, Padding 100 ms.
- Slower, teaching pace: raise Minimum pause toward 1 s and Padding to 250 ms.
Minimum pause runs from 0.2 to 3.0 s and Padding from 0 to 500 ms. If background noise hides the pauses, raise the threshold a few dB at a time until the quiet parts count as silence.
Listening checks before you export
Play the preview and check each of these. Each one points to a setting.
- Word starts and endings are not clipped. If they are, raise Padding.
- You can still hear a breath between sentences. If not, raise Minimum pause.
- A question is followed by a beat before the answer.
- A joke or a key number still has its pause before it.
- Listen once with your eyes closed. Rushed pacing is heard, not seen.
Remove dead air and failed takes with an AI silence remover
The browser tool cuts by loudness, so it cannot tell a failed take from a good one. For that, ClipsPal edits from the transcript on your Mac.
- Drop the recorded clips into ClipsPal. It transcribes them on the Mac.
- One click cuts failed takes, silences and filler, and adds zoom-ins, subtitles, visuals and sound effects.
- The result opens in a multi-track timeline. Play it back and run the same listening checks.
- Where a pause should be longer, change that cut by hand or type a request to Director.
Your footage never leaves the Mac. Only the transcript goes to the AI account you already have (Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode) or to a free local model. ClipsPal needs macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon, and it suits any YouTube video editor workflow built on talking-head recordings.
