1. ClipsPal

ClipsPal is a Mac app that edits recorded talking-head video. It is built for the footage where you said the line four times and only one take is good.

  • Local transcription. Clips are transcribed on your Mac. Only the transcript goes to the AI account you already have (Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode) or to a free local model. Footage never leaves the Mac.
  • One-click first cut. It cuts failed takes, silences and filler, then adds zoom-ins, subtitles, visuals and sound effects.
  • A timeline you can still edit. The result opens in a multi-track timeline. Fix it by hand or type a request to Director.
  • Outputs. Finished videos can be turned into shorts and articles.
  • Requirements. macOS 14 or later, Apple Silicon, and an AI account or a local model. There is no browser editor. It is a one-time lifetime purchase with a free download. See the video editor for Mac page for the details.

2. DaVinci Resolve (stay if you grade or mix)

Resolve is the tool to keep when a video needs more than a clean cut. One app covers editing, color, Fusion effects and motion graphics, Fairlight audio and delivery, on Mac, Windows and Linux. The free version edits up to 60 fps in Ultra HD. Studio costs $295 and adds the DaVinci Neural Engine AI tools, including voice isolation. Stay if you need grading, motion graphics, audio post or multi-user collaboration.

3. Descript

Descript edits video through the transcript: delete a word and that moment of footage goes with it. It removes filler words and retakes, and its Underlord AI co-editor takes instructions. There is a free plan, and paid plans start at $16 per person per month at the annual rate. A fit if you want recording and text-based editing in one tool.

4. CapCut

CapCut has desktop, online, tablet and mobile versions and a free plan. Its Pro and Ultra plans are paid, with prices that vary by region. It offers Reels and TikTok templates and automatic captions, so it suits creators making vertical social video from templates.

5. iMovie

iMovie is free. It edits up to 4K and includes titles, green screen effects, one-click Enhance and stabilization, and it can send a project to Final Cut Pro. The Mac App Store listing requires macOS 26.4 or later. A fit for a simple manual cut at no cost.

How to choose

  • Editing control: Resolve gives full control. ClipsPal's multi-track timeline covers hand fixes after the automated cut.
  • Automation: ClipsPal or Descript if you want a first cut from raw takes.
  • Outputs: ClipsPal for shorts and articles from a finished video, CapCut for vertical and social templates.
  • Requirements: ClipsPal needs an Apple Silicon Mac and an AI account or local model. Resolve and CapCut run on more platforms.
